Comparison: Vinyl Flooring vs Laminate

You’re facing the decision: vinyl or laminate? Both look good, both click together, both cost similarly. Yet they are fundamentally different floorings with different strengths. And the decision doesn’t depend on which is “better,” but which better fits your room, your daily life, and your project.

This comparison is fact-based. We sell both (vinyl: SMARtec, EVOtec, XPERtec. Laminate: MINAtec) and have no reason to badmouth either floor type. Here are the differences, honestly broken down.

The fundamental difference: What’s inside?

Vinyl flooring consists of a mineral carrier (SPC: limestone + polymer, or EPC: expanded polymer core) with a printed decorative layer and a transparent PU wear layer. The material is completely plastic-based, contains no wood, and is therefore 100% waterproof.

Laminate consists of an HDF carrier board (high-density fiberboard) with a printed decorative layer and an overlay (melamine resin sealing). The core is wood-based. This means: HDF can swell with moisture. Laminate is therefore not suitable for wet rooms.

This is the most important difference, from which almost all other pros and cons derive.

Vinyl vs. laminate: The comparison in 12 categories

Property Vinyl flooring (click vinyl) Laminate flooring
Carrier material SPC (limestone + polymer) or EPC (polymer + cork). No wood content. HDF (high-density fiberboard). Wood-based.
Water resistance 100% waterproof. No swelling, even with standing water. Not waterproof. HDF swells with moisture. Irreversible.
Suitable for wet rooms Yes: bathroom, kitchen, utility room, laundry room. No. Recommended only for dry living areas.
Foot warmth Pleasantly warm. Elastic surface feels soft barefoot. Rather neutral to cool. HDF core conducts heat less well.
Impact sound Damped (elastic material). Even quieter with integrated insulation. Louder (hard HDF core). Separate insulation recommended.
Scratch resistance Good (PUR sealing). Premium: SMARtec PLUS with reinforced wear layer. Very good (melamine overlay). Laminate is generally more scratch-resistant than vinyl.
Compression resistance Very good (SPC/EPC). Chair casters, heavy furniture no problem. Good. Localized pressure can leave dents.
Build height 4–8 mm (click vinyl). 2–3 mm (glue-down vinyl). 7–8 mm. Generally slightly thicker than click vinyl.
Underfloor heating Well suited. Glue-down vinyl optimal (best thermal conductivity). Conditionally suitable. HDF insulates more, efficiency lower.
Installation Click (floating) or glue-down (full surface). Both DIY-friendly. Click (floating). Easy DIY installation.
Look / feel Wood, stone, concrete, herringbone. Embossed in register (tactile texture). Wood, stone. Good designs, but surface feels smoother.
Price (material) 20–45 €/m² depending on collection. 15–20 €/m². Lower entry price.

Where vinyl flooring is the better choice

Wet rooms: bathroom, kitchen, utility room

There is no debate here. Laminate and moisture do not get along. Vinyl is the only click option that works in the bathroom and kitchen. Period.

Vinyl flooring in the bathroom

Multi-family houses: impact sound is a factor

In rental apartments and multi-family houses, impact sound is a real issue. Vinyl dampens better than laminate. The elastic core absorbs footsteps, and the integrated insulation enhances the effect. Those who want to avoid complaints from neighbors are safer with vinyl.

Underfloor heating: vinyl conducts heat better

Glue-down vinyl has the lowest thermal resistance of all floor coverings because it lies directly on the screed. But click vinyl with SPC core also conducts heat better than HDF-based laminate. Those with underfloor heating get more efficiency with vinyl.

Pets and children

Spilled water, wet paws, knocked-over glasses: vinyl forgives liquids. Laminate does not. Also: vinyl is elastic and cushions falls and noise better.

Where laminate is the better choice

Price: Laminate is cheaper

In the entry-level segment, laminate costs €15–20/m², vinyl €20–30/m². If you have a large project with a limited budget and don’t include wet rooms, you can save money with laminate. Our MINAtec Collection offers solid oak-look laminate with click installation.

Scratch Resistance: Laminate is harder

The melamine overlay of laminate is extremely scratch-resistant. Harder than the PUR coating of most vinyl floors. If you’re looking for a floor that handles dog claws, chair legs, and small stones under shoes especially well, laminate has an advantage. However: our SMARtec PLUS Collection with reinforced PUR coating comes very close to laminate’s scratch resistance.

Dry living areas without special requirements

For a bedroom, an office, or a hallway in a dry apartment without underfloor heating: laminate does its job reliably and costs less. Not every room needs the advantages of vinyl.

The Decision: When Vinyl, When Laminate?

CHOOSE VINYL IF... CHOOSE LAMINATE IF...
...you include bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. ...you only cover dry rooms.
...you have pets or small children. ...maximum scratch resistance is a priority.
...you have underfloor heating. ...you don’t have underfloor heating and price matters.
...you live in a multi-family house (impact sound). ...impact sound is not an issue (single-family house, ground floor).
...you want a continuous floor in all rooms. ...you plan different floors per room.
...foot warmth and elasticity matter to you. ...the entry price is important to you.
...you want to lay it over tiles (low build height). ...the subfloor is level and dry.

In many cases, the answer is: vinyl in wet rooms, laminate (or vinyl) in the rest. If you want uniformity, vinyl is better because it works everywhere. If you only cover dry rooms and want to save money, laminate is a good choice.

No winner, just the right choice for the right room.

Our Collections: Vinyl and Laminate from a Single Source

At Floorshop24, you don’t have to choose just one dealer per floor type. We offer both in manufacturer quality:

Vinyl (glue-down): XPERtec (dryback, 2.5 mm)

Laminate: MINAtec (HDF, click installation, dry rooms)

You can find all technical data in our guide: Technical specifications of all floors.

Conclusion: There is no winner. Only the right choice.
