SMARtec Herringbone Installation Instructions

Additional information for preparation and care

Application Area

SMARtec herringbone click vinyl flooring is a durable, low-maintenance, and visually appealing floor covering. It is suitable for living spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, kitchens, or bathrooms as well as for basement rooms. It can also be used in commercial areas (e.g., offices, shops). Thanks to the low installation height, it is ideal for new construction and renovation.

The floor is suitable for warm water underfloor heating according to DIN EN 1264-3, but not for electric heating systems.

Room Climate

For the floor to adapt optimally, a temperature of 18–30 °C must be maintained during acclimatization and installation. Recommended are 20–22 °C and a relative humidity of 35–65 %.

For underfloor heating, the surface temperature must not exceed 28 °C. In winter, sufficient humidity should be ensured and increased if necessary by humidifiers.

Transport & Storage

  • Store for 48 hours in the closed package in the installation room before laying.
  • Always transport and store packages lying flat on a level surface.
  • Never stand on the narrow side or place on battens – this could cause edge damage or warping.

Gaps & Expansion Joints

  • In rooms without strong sunlight, the floor can be laid up to 20 m length without expansion joints.
  • For larger areas, complicated layouts (L-, Z-, or U-shape, constrictions, door passages) or fixed installations (e.g., kitchen islands), expansion joints must be planned.
  • A minimum distance of 10 mm must be maintained to all walls, doors, heating pipes, and fixed components.
  • Movement joints in the screed must be adopted.
  • Intense sunlight can cause expansion – shading protects the floor.

Preparation Before Installation

  • Open packages only shortly before installation and mix planks from different packages to balance color differences.
  • Check each plank in good light for color, structure, and possible damage. Damaged parts must not be installed.
  • Load distributors must be used under heavy furniture or fixtures.

Subfloor

  • Must be level, load-bearing, clean, and dry.
  • Textile old coverings as well as soft or loose substrates must be removed.
  • Unevenness over 2 mm per meter must be leveled.
  • No additional impact sound insulation should be used – the floor already has integrated insulation.
  • Permissible residual moisture of new screeds (CM measurement):
    Cement screed: 2.0 % (1.8 % heated)
    Calcium sulfate: 0.5 % (0.3 % heated)

Installation

  • Lay PE foil (0.2 mm) as a vapor barrier over the entire area.
  • Set spacer wedges (10mm distance between plank and wall).
  • Sort A and B planks.
  • Installation instructions as PDF

Finishing Work

  • Remove all spacer wedges.
  • Install baseboards, transition strips, and pipe rosettes.
  • Joints must not be sealed with silicone or sealant.

Cleaning & Care

  • The surface is durable and easy to clean.
  • Regularly sweep or vacuum (use parquet nozzle).
  • Avoid aggressive cleaners, solvents, sand, and dirt – they can cause scratches or discoloration.
  • Equip furniture with felt glides, use office chairs only with soft rollers, preferably on a floor protection mat.
  • Dirt trap zones in the entrance area significantly reduce cleaning effort.
  • Remove stains immediately.
